September 03, 2018

Exciting hula competitions, a Kauai composers' contest, concerts, and native demonstrations are only a few of the activities you’ll find at the Kauai Mokihana Festival on September 23-29. Different events of this week-long celebration of Hawaiian culture and history will be held at several venues throughout the island, beginning with a Hawaiian church service at the Kapaa First Hawaiian Church on September 23. The historical Waimea Theater will host the 33rd Annual Kauai Composers Contest and Concert on September 24.

This event promotes the composition of new music in the following categories: Hawaiian, Contemporary Hawaiian, Open and Professional. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded. The various Hula competitions will all be held at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Center Hall on September 27-29 and will feature the following categories: Solo/Group Kahiko, or ancient-style hula, Auana, or modern hula, and the Solo, Auana, and Finale on the final day of the competition. Awards will be presented by the Hawaii Community Foundation. For details, call (808) 822-2166.
