Heiva I Kauai: A Celebration of Tahitian Culture

August 01, 2017

Join us at Kapaa Beach Park on August 5th and 6th for the 16th annual Heiva I Kauai, an international Tahitian dance competition. This family-friendly celebration of Tahitian culture is a colorful and entertaining event that features a variety of dance and drumming performers. During this community-sponsored event, the performers will show off their skills, talents, and cultural knowledge to a daily audience of thousands. Contestants from Japan, Hawaii, and the Mainland will compete solo and in groups, with ages ranging from toddlers to elders.

Opening ceremonies begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 5th, and the competition will start immediately afterward with the youngest age groups performing first, followed by each older age group. Group competitions are scheduled for Sunday, until the conclusion of the competition at 5:00 p.m. In addition to the dances and drumming, food, gifts, artwork, jewelry, woodwork, clothing, and other Tahitian and Pacific Island items will be offered by dozens of vendors. Coconut frond and lauhala weaving, lei making, and Polynesian carving will be demonstrated by authentic Polynesian artisans too.
